Masters disrupted by thunderstorm
![]() Every picture tells a story. Augusta patrons take shelter under a sea of umbrellas. AUGUSTA, Georgia -- A storm delay during the third round of the 70th U.S. Masters ensured that the leaders would not finish their rounds on Saturday and set up the possibility that the first major of the season would run over to Monday. Barely half of the 47 players who made the cut had started their third rounds before a thunderstorm suspended play at Augusta National. Chad Campbell, who led after 36 holes on six-under par 138, and fellow American Rocco Mediate were about two hours shy off teeing off when play was halted. It pushes the finish of the third round to Sunday afternoon when forecasts are sunny, and will mandate a two-tee start or keeping the same pairings for the final round in order to attempt to complete the final round before darkness. The interruption made this the eighth Masters in nine years to be delayed by bad weather. The only non-disrupted year in the run was 2001 and even that saw rain at times. The Masters has not been forced into a Monday finish since 1983 when Spain's Seve Ballesteros was the winner. Other Monday Masters finishes came in 1973, when Tommy Aaron won after the end of the fourth round was postponed; 1961, when South African Gary Player won the first of his three Masters titles after Sunday's final round was washed out; and 1936, when the final 36 holes were played Monday and Horton Smith captured the third Masters crown.
