Spain face Italians in cup playoff
LONDON, England -- Spain, the 2004 Davis Cup winners, must beat Italy in the playoffs in September if they are to retain their place in the elite World Group. The Spaniards have home advantage for the tie to be played from September. 22-24, following Wednesday's draw by the International Tennis Federation. World No. 1 Roger Federer will have to decide whether to aid his country's cause once again when Switzerland host Serbia & Montenegro in their playoff. Federer interrupted his time off after his U.S. Open triumph to help the Swiss team beat Britain in last year's playoffs. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal was missing through injury when his Spanish team-mates suffered a shock 4-1 defeat by Belarus in the first round of this year's competition. The eight winners go into the 2007 World Group, with the losers relegated to Group One. Russia host the United States and Australia travel to Argentina in this year's World Group semifinals on the same weekend as the playoffs. Playoff draw (first named team at home) Austria v Mexico Germany v Thailand Netherlands v Czech Republic Romanian v South Korea Slovak Republic v Belgium Spain v Italy Sweden v Brazil Switzerland v Serbia & Montenegro
