Capel tests positive for cannabis
![]() Capel has failed three previous tests prior to this latest incident. LONDON, England -- Former world 200 meters champion John Capel faces a two-year ban after a fourth offence involving the recreational drug cannabis. A statement on the International Association of Athletics Federation website said the 27-year-old American tested positive at an indoor meeting in Birmingham, England, last February. Capel lost the chance of a lucrative career in American football when he was dropped by the Chicago Bears in 2001 after a positive cannabis test and a possession charge. He was replaced on the U.S. 4x100 meters relay squad for the 2004 Athens Olympics after another positive test. Capel won the 200 meters gold medal at the 2003 Paris world championships and finished third in Helsinki last year. The IAAF statement said Capel had failed an in-competition doping test in Birmingham. The minimum sanction for a second violation is a two-year ban. "The case is subject to standard IAAF results management procedures and the matter is in the hands of USA Track & Field and the United States Anti-Doping Agency for a hearing or final determination," the statement added.
