PARIS, France -- Olympique Marseille bounced back from their French Cup final defeat by winning 2-1 at Auxerre on Wednesday to boost their chances of playing in Europe next season. Marseille, who lost 2-1 to arch-rivals Paris St Germain in the Cup final on Saturday, climb a spot to fourth, level on points with third-placed Lille. Senegal striker Mamadou Niang opened the scoring from close range for Marseille on 15 minutes before Argentine defender Renato Civelli doubled the advantage with a header in the 68th minute. Auxerre, who stick to seventh place and face a struggle to win a ticket to Europe, pulled one back through defender Jean-Pascal Mignot on 76 minutes. PSG were also in action on Wednesday and snatched a 1-1 draw at Stade Rennes courtesy of a goal in injury time for Ivory Coast forward Bonaventure Kalou. Rennes had opened the scoring on 70 minutes with a penalty from Sweden midfielder Kim Kallstrom. Leaders Olympique Lyon, with 81 points from 36 games, have already secured a record fifth consecutive title while Girondins Bordeaux, lying second on 65 points, are certain to finish runners-up to qualify directly for the Champions League. With two games left, Lille and Marseille follow on 58 points with Rennes in fifth place a point adrift. The third-placed team enter the preliminary round of the Champions League with the fourth-placed side joining Cup winners PSG and League Cup champions Nancy into the UEFA Cup.
