SYDNEY, Australia -- Former New Zealand rugby captain Bob Duff has died in Christchurch aged 80, the NZRU) announced.

Duff played 11 tests for the All Blacks between 1951 and 1956, captaining the team against South Africa in 1956.

He also served as a national selector between 1971 and 1973 and was assistant manager to the 1972-73 side that toured North America, the British Isles and Europe.

"Bob made a significant contribution to New Zealand rugby, both on and off the field," NZRU Chairman Jock Hobbs said in a statement.

"He will be remembered both for his time in the All Blacks jersey, in particular captaining New Zealand in the decisive matches of the 1956 Springboks test series, and for his contribution as an All Blacks selector, assistant manager and coach."
