Canada takes Catalonia Tour lead

Canjada enjoys his podium kisses after snatching a narrow Catalonia lead.

LLORET DE MAR, Spain -- Spaniard David Canada ousted compatriot Carlos Castano from the leadership of the Tour of Catalonia on the race's penultimate stage won by Slovenian Matej Mujerli.

Canada formed part of a group of 46 riders that moved ahead on hilly terrain early in the 166km stage from Manlleu to Lloret de Mar.

Castano's Kaiku team failed to pull back the bunch, which gained an advantage of more than five minutes by the finish.

Saunier Duval-Prodir rider Canada now leads the race by two seconds from Colombian Santiago Botero, with Frenchman Christophe Moreau eight seconds back in third.

"We saw that Castano was suffering badly on the stage's first climb so we went all out," said Canada, who finished 27th on the stage.

"Phonak and Ag2R worked hard for their leaders Botero and Moreau, also in the front group, so it worked out perfectly."

Canada's move to the top of the standings made it a great day for his team who also celebrated Leonardo Piepoli's stage victory in the Tour of Italy.

Castano offered no excuses. "I couldn't do anything, I was exhausted and my team wasn't strong enough to chase well," he said.

The stage win went to Slovenian Mujerli after he launched a powerful lone attack 2km from the finish.

Thor Hushovd of Norway led in the main pack for second, with Italian Manuel Quinziato in third.

"It was a very tricky win, I had no idea if I was going to get caught or not," said Liquigas rider Mujerli. "I just went all out and hoped I could stay away -- and l hit the jackpot," he added.

Canada's slender overall advantage will be under threat on Sunday's hilly 121.6km final stage from Lloret to Barcelona.
