Sweden on course for hockey double
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSRIGA, Latvia -- Olympic champions Sweden beat Canada 5-4 with the help of a lucky own goal by a Canadian defenseman to reach the ice hockey world championship final. The win moves the Swedes a step closer to an unprecedented golden double by winning both world and Olympic titles in the same year. In Sunday's final they will meet defending champions the Czech Republic, who came from behind to beat Finland 3-1 in the first semifinal. Tony Martensson was credited with Sweden's third goal, which made the score 3-1 midway through the first period, but it was Brad Stuart who inadvertently kicked the puck into his own net as stunned Canada goaltender Marc Denis looked in disbelief. Mike Comrie made it 3-2 with a powerplay marker at 16:38 but then Sweden scored two quick goals through Mikael Samuelsson and Jonas Nordquist early in the second to stretch 5-2 ahead. The Canadians fought back, Sidney Crosby making it 5-3 late in the second period after poking in a rebound past Sweden goalie Johan Holmqvist and Patrice Bergeron brought the Canadians within one with a powerplay goal early in the third. But despite pulling their goaltender for a sixth attacker with 1:32 left on the clock, Canada could not get an equaliser. Kyle Calder had scored Canada's opener at 8:11 after early goals from Niklas Kronwall and Jorgen Jonsson for Sweden. Sweden's victory was marred by a brawl after Mika Hannula cross-checked Crosby into the boards after the Pittsburgh Penguins rookie scored his eighth goal in eight games to lead the championship scoring. Hannula hit Crosby on the head with his stick and was ejected from the game after getting a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct. He will miss Sunday's final.
