Second on the 207-km stage from Annecy to Bourgoin-Jallieu was Frenchman Thomas Voeckler and third was Spaniard Egoi Martinez. Wegmann, who rides for the Gerolsteiner squad, was part of a four-man break some 15 kms from the line and took over the lead from American David Zabriskie, who won Sunday's prologue. He attacked on the category 4 Rapoux climb and was quickly followed by France's Thomas Voeckler and Spaniards Egoi Martinez and Francesco Mancebo to leave the sprinters frustrated on one of the few stages in the mountainous race they could have feasibly contested. It was the 10th victory of Wegmann's career and saw him take the leader's jersey by five seconds. The peloton, led home by Italian Danilo Napolitano, finished 13 seocnds back. The eight-stage race, which finishes on Sunday, is an important warm-up event for July's Tour de France. The field includes Tour hopefuls Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan, Spain's Alejandro Valverde and Floyd Landis of the U.S.
