South Africa too good for Scotland
![]() Top points scorer Montgomery is tackled during South Africa's victory. DURBAN, South Africa -- Fullback Percy Montgomery scored 21 points and South Africa four tries in a crushing 36-16 defeat of Scotland on Saturday. Montgomery touched down once, and kicked two conversions and four penalties to keep the home side on top throughout. Scotland's only reply was a late converted try by replacement left wing Simon Webster and three penalties by right wing Chris Paterson. The home side's win was built on a commanding performance by their forwards, who were especially dominant in the scrums. Under coach Jake White, South Africa have now won 11 of their 12 home matches with the other drawn. Scotland have yet to beat the Springboks in South Africa after four Tests in the republic. South Africa came close to scoring in the 13th minute after they won a heel against the head at a scrum 30 meters from their own goalline and surged upfield. The move floundered when left wing Andre Snyman spilled the ball 10 meters from the Scottish line. Two minutes later the South African pack drove the Scots over their goalline, but the ball was hidden from view and the try was not awarded. Seconds after that flank Schalk Burger muscled his way through the defence to score the first try. South Africa swept back into Scottish territory from the restart, and right wing Breyton Paulse broke through one tackle and evaded a goalline challenge to put the Springboks 15-3 ahead. The home side might have scored their third try in the 29th minute but fullback Hugo Southwell tackled scrumhalf Fourie du Preez into the corner flag. Scotland, 18-6 down at halftime, regrouped well and played more constructive rugby early in the second half. However, South Africa sealed their win in the 53rd minute when centre Jean de Villiers broke through the defence and passed to Snyman, who trotted in to score a try that put the Springboks 16 points clear. Montgomery put the finishing touches to a sparkling personal performance when he jinked his way through the defence to touch down in the 64th minute. The match marked the start of South Africa's centenary season. The Springboks played their first test against Scotland in Glasgow in 1906, when Scotland won 6-0. The second Test will be played in Port Elizabeth next Saturday.
