OSLO, Norway -- Norway will bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018 and will choose its venue next February.

Norway, one of the most successful Winter Olympic nations, held the 1994 Games in Lillehammer. Oslo hosted them in 1952.

The cities of Oslo, Trondheim, Lillehammer and Tromsoe in the Arctic have been touted as possible host cities.

"The board of the Norwegian Confederation of Sports has decided that it will apply for the Olympics and Paralympics in 2018," said Katinka Riksfjord Sporsem, spokeswoman for the confederation and the Norwegian Olympic Committee.

"In February 2007 they will make their choice of city."

On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee named Russia's Sochi, Salzburg in Austria and Pyeongchang in South Korea on a shortlist to host the 2014 Games.

Turin hosted this year's Winter Games and Vancouver will stage the event in 2010.
