Clijsters takes Bank of West title
![]() Clijsters is in good form ahead of next month's U.S. Open. STANFORD, California -- Top seed Kim Clijsters tuned up for her defense of the U.S. Open crown with a 6-4 6-2 win over Swiss Patty Schnyder in the final of the Bank of West Classic tournament in Stanford. It was the Belgium's fourth win in the hardcourt event and she was rarely threatened by second-seeded Schnyder. The left-handed Schnyder attempted to employ an aggressive approach against Clijsters but the move backfired as the Belgian proved to be up to the task. Last year, the world number two won four titles on U.S. hard courts during the summer swing, including her first grand slam title at Flushing Meadows. Clijsters improved to 5-2 against Schnyder, including 3-0 on hard courts. It was Clijsters's 32nd career title but just her second this year following a claycourt win at Warsaw in May. Schnyder has not won a title since Cincinnati last year. ![]()
