LONDON, England -- Jonny Wilkinson, whose England career has been blighted by injury since he scored the winning points in the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, could be out of action for several weeks after damaging his knee. The flyhalf had to be helped from the pitch in the 46th minute of his Newcastle side's 20-19 Premiership win over Worcester on Friday. Newcastle director of rugby John Fletcher said Wilkinson had suffered a twist and bang on the right knee, adding that the injury would be assessed on Saturday after the swelling has subsided. "You don't want to lose world-class players let alone ones who are World Cup winners. We feel desperately sorry for Jonny," said Fletcher. Wilkinson, 27, has suffered Injuries to his neck, groin, shoulder, arm and left knee as well as an appendix operation since he was feted as a national hero after slotting the extra-time drop goal that beat Australia in Sydney. ![]() Wilkinson is helped off the field after suffering his latest injury setback. |
