STUTTGART, Germany -- Top seed Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Thursday, because of a right shoulder injury. The Frenchwoman withdrew shortly before she was to play her first match of the tournament, against Michaella Krajicek in the second round. Lisa Raymond, the highest-ranked loser in qualifying, has taken Mauresmo's place in the draw. "I felt it first at the end of practice on Monday and I was hoping that it was nothing serious," Mauresmo said. "When I was warming up today I felt the pain again and I think I made the right decision not to play. It's disappointing, but that's the way it is." Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Serena and Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic have also pulled out of the tournament with injuries. Mauresmo is seeking to finish the year as world number one for the first time. Meanwhile, Daniela Hantuchova eleiminated sixth-seeded Dinara Safina 6-2, 6-2 . Hantuchova lost in two sets to Safina last week in the quarterfinals in Luxembourg but this time dominated the Russian, who was playing her first event after reaching the top 10 for the first time. "I was expecting a tough match like last week when I lost. This makes today's win even sweeter," said Hantuchova, who has dropped from fifth to 19th in the world. ![]() Mauresmo withdrew shortly before her first scheduled match. |
