ST PETERSBURG, Russia -- Top seed Nikolay Davydenko crushed Frenchman Fabrice Santoro 6-3 6-1 in the first round of the St Petersburg Open on Tuesday. Second seed Tommy Robredo, however, was upset by Australian doubles specialist Wayne Arthurs 6-3 2-6 6-4, derailing the Spaniard's bid to qualify for next month's season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai. Third seed Mario Ancic of Croatia went through with a 7-5 6-1 victory over unseeded American Paul Goldstein. Russian Davydenko, one of several players chasing a spot in Shanghai, eased through his second victory over Santoro in 10 days in just 62 minutes. The world number six also beat the veteran Frenchman in straight sets in the Kremlin Cup semifinal in Moscow this month on the way to claiming his fourth title of the year.
