QUEBEC CITY, Canada -- Third-seeded Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden was eliminated by Ashley Harkleroad of the United States 7-6 6-3 in the first round of the Bell Challenge in Quebec City.

Arvidsson, last year's runner-up, has not won a match since the U.S. Open. It was Harkleroad's first win in three months over someone as high as her 43rd-ranked opponent.

Seventh-seeded Jamea Jackson of the United States quit while trailing Anastassia Rodionova of Russia 6-2 2-1 in her first match since retiring with a strained right thigh muscle at Bangkok two weeks ago.

Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France, trying to cap her breakthrough year with a third title, dispatched Galina Voskoboeva of Russia 6-1 6-4.

Fifth seed Sybille Bammer of Austria came back to beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 2-6 6-2 6-1. Bammer's reward was a second-round match against 2004 champion Martina Sucha of Slovakia, whom the Austrian has yet to beat in four meetings.

Vania King of the United States, who won her first WTA singles title in Bangkok this month, battled past Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, and awaits Wednesday's winner between top-seeded Jelena Jankovic and Venezuela's Milagros Sequera.

Another American, qualifier Lilia Osterloh, beat Canadian wild card Marie-Eve Pelletier 7-5 4-6 6-3, while 19-year-old Tanja Ostertag of Germany, who qualified for her first WTA main draw, edged qualifier Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-4.

Abigail Spears of the United States outlasted Nicole Pratt of Australia 7-6 6-7 6-3 for her third win this year on the main tour, and German qualifier Greta Arn beat Canadian wild card Stephanie Dubois 6-3 6-3.
