RUKA, Finland -- Finland's Arttu Lappi won the World Cup ski jumping opener in Ruka on Friday but the event was reduced to one jump because of strong winds and heavy snow. Lappi, jumping fifth, cleared 141 meters for 154.8 points. Former double Olympic champion Simon Ammann of Switzerland was second with a 136-meter jump for 145.7 points, edging ahead of Anders Jacobsen on style, after the Norwegian rookie leapt 137.5 meters for 145.5 points. "The event should have been canceled halfway through the first round," said Finland's Janne Ahonen, who only managed 90 meters. World Cup champion Jakub Janda hit 95.5 meters and was 56th. Of the top 15 in last year's World Cup, only two would have qualified for a second round -- Thomas Morgenstern of Austria (112.5 meters) in 22nd place, and Finland's Matti Hautamaki (106.5) in 28th. ![]() Lappi was awarded 154.8 points for his leap of 141 meters. |
