PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- Owner Mario Lemieux says the Pittsburgh Penguins are considering relocation, after Pennsylvania authorities rejected a casino application from a firm which had promised to build the team a new arena. Isle of Capri Casinos offered to create a $290 million arena if the company was granted a licence in Pittsburgh by the state's gaming commission, which awarded a licence to another firm on Wednesday. Last week a prospective buyer of the financially-troubled Penguins withdrew his $175 million offer. "The team is off the market and we will begin to explore relocation options outside Pennsylvania," Lemieux said on the team's website. "After seven years of trying to work out a new arena deal exclusively in Pittsburgh, we need to take into consideration the long-term viability of the team and begin discussions with other cities that may be interested in NHL teams." Lemieux, a former Penguins great, said the club also planned to talk to local officials about a viable Pittsburgh arena plan. ![]() Lemieux said it was necessary to consider the team's long-term viability. |
