NEW YORK -- The NFL has suspended receiver Antonio Bryant of the San Francisco 49ers for four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Bryant has 40 catches for a team-high 733 yards and three touchdowns this season, his first with the 49ers. The suspension means he will sit out the rest of the regular season and it comes as blow to the 49ers (6-8), who are still mathematically alive for a play-off spot with just two weeks to go in the season. He will also miss two play-off games should San Francisco make the post-season, or the first two games of next season if they miss the play-offs. Bryant was arrested on November 19, on charges of reckless and drunken driving, at which time he also was confrontational with police, who used restraints to keep him in a patrol car. The receiver, who has had numerous run-ins with coaches during his five-year career, will lose $300,000 in salary from his four-year, $15-million contract. The NFL do not comment on the specifics of any suspension under the terms of their collective bargaining agreement with their players. ![]() Bryant is in his first season with the 49ers. |
