Real turn tide with two free-kicks
Two stunning free-kicks in the space of four minutes helped Real Madrid to overturn a one-goal deficit and beat Cadiz 3-1 to move within 10 points of Primera Liga leaders Barcelona. Roberto Carlos and David Beckham fired in spectacular efforts but were then outdone by Robinho, who scored a marvelous third. An aggressive Atletico Madrid earned their first win in 11 league games as goals from Maxi Rodriguez and Fernando Torres gave them a 2-0 victory at Real Zaragoza. Although Cadiz have the worst attack in the league they put up a creditable fight and silenced the home crowd when Alexandre Medina swept them into a 54th minute lead. With Real's fans expecting the worst as time ticked away Roberto Carlos blasted home a 67th minute free-kick and three minutes later England captain Beckham produced one his specials to put Real 2-1 ahead. He bent his swerving shot around the Cadiz wall and into the top corner of the net. With the crowd still purring over these two bits of magic Robinho added a magnificent third goal with eight minutes left. He controlled the ball on the outside of his foot and when it bounced down he struck home a 25-meter shot. It was Real's fourth consecutive victory and sent them up to third place in the table. Maxi strikesAtletico's Maxi scored just before the half hour at Zaragoza, when he poked a shot under advancing keeper Cesar after scorching down the right to meet a clever through ball from playmaker Ariel Ibagaza. The Argentine winger then won a penalty early in the second half, after being felled by Cesar following another great run along the right wing. Leading striker Torres sent Cesar the wrong way with his spot kick as Atletico inflicted a first defeat in seven league matches on Zaragoza, who put them out of the King's Cup in midweek. It was also a first win for Atletico's new coach Pepe Murcia, who took charge when Carlos Bianchi was sacked this month.
