HAMBURG, Germany -- Hamburg have won the race to sign 21-year-old Ajax right-sided midfielder Nigel de Jong.
Reports suggest the Dutch club have received a fee in the region of one million euros for the player whose contract was due to expire in six months' time.
English clubs Tottenham and West Ham had been keen on securing de Jong's services - but Hamburg have clinched the deal with the player signing a four-and-a-half year contract.
De Jong will join fellow Dutch internationals Khalid Boulahrouz and Rafael van der Vaart at Hamburg as the Bundesliga outfit seek to cement their title challenge.
De Jong made his international debut in March 2004 and has gone on to win nine further caps.
Bobic moves on
Meanwhile, former German international forward Fredi Bobic has signed for Croatian side FC Rijeka.
Bobic joins Rijeka after playing two seasons for Hertha Berlin.
The 34-year-old has also played for Bundesliga sides Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund and had a brief spell in England with Bolton Wanderers.
Rijeka are second in the 12-team league with 36 points after 18 matches, eight points behind Dinamo Zagreb.
