Hartson quits international arena
![]() Hartson plans to concentrate his efforts on helping Scotland's Celtic LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Wales striker John Hartson announced his retirement from international soccer on Monday. "It is a sad day for me because I have loved playing for my country and representing the Welsh people for a number of years," the 30-year-old said in a statement. "Now I have made this decision I will be concentrating my efforts 100 percent on doing the best I can for Celtic FC and hopefully this decision will allow me to really enjoy the final few years of my career." The former Arsenal forward scored 14 goals in 51 appearances since making his debut for Wales in 1995. "John has been a great servant of the Wales side for more than a decade," national manager John Toshack said in a statement from the Football Association of Wales. "His power in the air made him a potent force and an integral part of the side." Wales failed to qualify for this year's World Cup finals in Germany and begin their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign in September. They are in Group D with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, San Marino and Slovakia.
