Kanatec appointed Macedonia coach
![]() Katanec has been appointed after a successful stint with native Slovenia SKOPJE, Macedonia -- Slovenia's Srecko Katanec has signed a two-year-contract as Macedonia's national coach. The 42-year-old Katanec, who led Slovenia to the 2000 European Championship finals and 2002 World Cup tournament, will earn 240,000 euros ($285,200) over the two years. The former Sampdoria midfielder becomed only the second foreigner to coach the Balkan country's team after Serbian Slobodan Santrac, who resigned last August. "It's a big honor to be named as head coach of Macedonia," said Katanec, who was unveiled at a news conference. "We will play football for spectators. I prefer a very aggressive style of play and this must be our distinguishing mark." Katanec will be assisted by Vujadin Stanoikovic, Danco Celevski and Uran Imeri. "Our main goal will be to bring fans back to the stadium," said Haralmpie Hadziristeski, president of the Macedonian Football Federation. "We also want to achieve better results than over the last few years". Macedonia could only manage fifth in their seven-team qualifying group for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, having won just two and drawn three of their 12 matches. Macedonia have a friendly at home to Bulgaria on March 1 and Katanec will use it as the start of their preparations ahead of the qualifiers for Euro 2008. They are in qualifying Group G with England, Croatia, Russia, Israel, Estonia and Andorra. Katanec is due to announce his first squad on Tuesday.
