Striker Frei to have groin surgery
![]() Frei is hoping his surgery will enable him to compete in the World Cup finals PARIS, France -- Switzerland and Rennes striker Alexander Frei is to undergo groin surgery next week and hopes to return to action before the World Cup starts in June. "Doctors say that I'll be out for up to 12 weeks but things are never the way they say," said the 26-year-old. "We will wait and see how things are after the surgery. But what is certain is that I'll try to come back as soon as possible. "I hope this won't prevent me from taking part in the World Cup. I have tried to make the best choice for my health and for my career," he said. Frei was a key player in Switzerland's qualification for the 2006 finals. The Swiss finished second to France in the group stage and secured their trip to Germany thanks to a controversial victory over Turkey in the play-offs in November. Switzerland were drawn in World Cup Group G which also features France, South Korea and Togo.
