Arsenal show Real class at Fulham

LONDON, England -- Arsenal scored a morale-boosting 4-0 away win at Fulham ahead of their Champions League return against Real Madrid to revive their hopes of a top four spot in England. Arsene Wenger's men showed the form that had given them a 1-0 win against Real in the Bernabeu to outclass their London rivals with captain Thierry Henry scoring twice. Improving Newcastle dented Bolton's hopes of a possible Champions League qualifying spot with a 3-1 home win. Returning Alan Shearer scored the second goal for Newcastle who are unbeaten in six since Glenn Roeder, with assistance from Shearer, took over from the sacked Graeme Souness. In the late match, Liverpool were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Charlton, but move into outright second behind Chelsea. Liverpool are one point ahead of Manchester United having played two matches more. Robbie Fowler looked to have scored his first goal since returning to Anfield, but a late effort was ruled out for offside. At Craven Cottage it was a surprise that Arsenal took 31 iminutes to take the lead. Abou Diaby picked out Henry and the French striker accelerated past Fulham right-back Moritz Volz before unleashing a fierce drive into the roof of the net from an acute angle. Arsenal were rampant now and it took just four minutes for Wengers men to increase their lead. Ljungberg threaded an astute pass inside Volz and Emmanuel Adebayor kept his composure to slide a low shot past Tony Warner for his second goal since joining from Monaco in January. Steed Malbranque finally brought Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann into action with a long range effort, but Henry continued to torment the Fulham defence and added their third in the 76th minute. Cesc Fabregas put the seal on a perfect afternoon for the visitors when he calmly finished from close range in the 85th minute. Entertaining matchWest Ham and Everton, who are both eyeing UEFA Cup places, shared four goals in an entertaining match at Upton Park, watched by England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. Aston Villa had Milan Baros to thank for his 36th minute winner against second-bottom Portsmouth who are looking set for relegation. With West Brom losing to leaders Chelsea earlier in the day, Birmingham missed the chance to close up when they lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough, with Mark Viduka getting the goal that eases Boro's own relegation fears. European champions Liverpool entertain Charlton in the Saturday evening kickoff. Fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur are at home to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday while third-placed Manchester United visit Wigan Athletic on Monday.
