Man Utd are gifted a last-gasp win

LONDON, England -- Manchester United fought back to beat unlucky Wigan Athletic 2-1 thanks to a stoppage time own goal by Pascal Chimbonda in Monday's Premiership clash.

The win took United back above Liverpool into second place with 57 points from 27 games although they trail leaders Chelsea by 15 points, albeit with a game in hand.

Wigan gave a far better performance than they had in last month's 4-0 League Cup final defeat against United at the Millennium Stadium last month.

They were desperately unlucky not to take something from the game as Chimbonda turned the ball into his own net after Louis Saha's shot came back off the bar and hit the full back.

Sprightly Wigan had taken the lead through Paul Scharner just before the hour but United levelled 14 minutes later through Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wigan, still stinging from their defeat in Cardiff last month, looked on course for victory.

Arjan de Zeeuw's header was cleared off the line by Ryan Giggs, but Jason Roberts fired the rebound back towards goal, only for van der Sar to save and push the ball into Scharner's path, leaving the Austrian with a close range strike to score.

Ronaldo's 11th goal of the season came off a pass from Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had entered the game as a substitute three minutes earlier.

It was Ronaldo's sixth goal in his last five games and gave United the impetus to snatch an unlikely win.
