Unlucky Andrade misses the World Cup following knee surgery

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- Deportivo Coruna's Portugal center-back Jorge Andrade will miss the World Cup and be sidelined for between five and sixth months after undergoing knee surgery, the club said on Monday.

Andrade, a regular in Luiz Felipe Scolari's national side, severed the patellar tendon in his left knee during Deportivo's 3-2 defeat at Barcelona on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was carried off on a stretcher in the 58th minute after colliding with his own keeper Jose Molina as they tried to stop Barca striker Samuel Eto'o reaching the ball.

"His injury is terrible news," Scolari was quoted as saying in sports daily AS on Monday. "If he wants, he can still accompany us in Germany because he is still part of the team."

Portugal have been drawn in Group D alongside Mexico, Iran and Angola for the World Cup which gets underway on June 9.

Andrade's Spanish international team-mate at Deportivo, Juan Carlos Valeron, also had his World Cup dreams shattered when he tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee in January.

"Andrade's injury is a great loss for us," said Deportivo coach Joaquin Caparros, whose team slipped to eighth place in the Primera Liga after their defeat at Barcelona.
