Deisler scare ahead of World Cup
![]() Deisler missed the 2002 World Cup with a cruciate ligament injury BERLIN, Germany -- German international midfielder Sebastien Deisler has suffered a knee injury that will rule him out of next week's friendly against the United States in Dortmund. The Bayern Munich star suffered the injury after a training ground challenge by England international Owen Hargreaves. Deisler has had four operations on his troublesome knee and his absence is a worry for host nation Germany ahead of the summer's World Cup finals. Bayern said an arthroscopy would be needed to determine exactly how serious the injury was. The player will fly to the U.S. and be examined in the Colorado clinic of specialist Richard Steadman, who operated on Deisler's knee in 2002. Deisler will definitely sit out Sunday's Bundesliga game against Schalke 04 as well as the friendly on March 22. The midfielder missed the 2002 World Cup with a cruciate ligament knee injury and will hope the latest setback is not serious with the finals just three months away. ![]()
