![]() Matthaeus arrived in Brazil in January and had a record of seven wins from nine BERLIN, Germany -- Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus has stepped down as coach of Brazilian side Atletico Paranaense less than two months after taking the job. "I have informed the club's leadership that I am stepping down," said the 44-year-old. "It was not an easy decision to take." Matthaeus, who won a record 150 caps for West Germany and Germany and lifted the World Cup in 1990, was appointed coach by the club from the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba in January. The former Hungary coach said family reasons had motivated his decision. "I was missing my wife Marijana, who is in Budapest, and my children," he said. Atletico were unbeaten in nine games since Matthaeus took over, winning seven and drawing twice.
