ROTTERDAM, Netherlands -- Feyenoord coach Erwin Koeman has extended his contract with the Rotterdam-based club until July 2009.

Feyenoord chairman Jorien van den Herik said the club were happy with Koeman, who succeeded Ruud Gullit last year.

"He has proved already in his first year that he has the quality to handle the squad the right way and produce maximum performance," said Van den Herik.

"In 2008 we celebrate our centenary and want to celebrate that with a championship but earlier success would also be welcome."

Koeman, with PSV Eindhoven, Groningen and Mechelen during his playing career, said he was pleased with the club's confidence in him and denied that he was a candidate to succeed Guus Hiddink at PSV.

"My brother Ronald is named as a candidate but I haven't spoken to PSV," said Koeman. "I feel comfortable at Feyenoord and believe that with some reinforcements we can do better with this year."

Feyenoord are third in the Premier Division, 10 points behind PSV.
