Davies turns away in celebration after giving Albion a first half lead

LONDON, England -- Robbie Keane converted a last-minute penalty to give Tottenham a 2-1 win over luckless West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Monday.

Keane, who earlier hit his 50th league goal for the club, scored from the spot after keeper Tomasz Kuszczak hit a clearance at Jermain Defoe and then pulled him down under pressure.

Defender Curtis Davies had put Albion in front in the first half at White Hart Lane only for Keane to chip Kuszczak for the equalizer in the 68th minute.

The win gave fourth placed Tottenham, who occupy the final Champions League spot, 55 points.

They are three points clear of Blackburn and five ahead of Arsenal who have a game in hand after their clash at Portsmouth was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the weekend.

West Bromwich stayed 17th in the 20-team Premier League on 27 points, three clear of the relegation zone.

The Baggies opened the scoring in the 21st minute when skipper Davies headed in from close range following Jonathan Greening's free-kick.

Spurs offered little in the first half, their only notable effort coming from Jermain Defoe, who saw a 20-yard drive well-saved by Kuszczak.

They looked a more dangerous proposition in the second-half and the introduction of Mido on the hour almost saw the forward score immediately.

Played in by Defoe, he broke clear but shot across the face of the goal from a tight angle.

The equalizer Spurs had long been threatening came when midfielder Michael Carrick's slide-rule pass found Keane on the edge of the box.

Republic of Ireland international Keane, initially with his back to goal, turned and did the rest with a sublime chip over Kuszczak.

Kanu then wasted a glorious chance for West Brom, when, following a free-kick on the left, his header from a few yards deflected off Mido and into the arms of Paul Robinson.

The England keeper was called on again late on to save Steve Watson's header before chaos ensued at the other end.

Kuszcak failed to deal with a back-pass, taking a heavy touch that presented Defoe with a sniff of an opportunity before the keeper then fouled the England striker in trying to atone for his initial mistake.

Although Mido put the ball in the back of the net, referee Chris Foy had already blown for a penalty.

Fortunate to stay on the field, the keeper could do nothing about Keane's spot-kick which wrapped up the points for Spurs.
