Celtic face United to honor Keane
![]() Keane joined Celtic in December after 12 trophy-laden years in Manchester. GLASGOW, Scotland -- Celtic will play Manchester United in Roy Keane's testimonial at Old Trafford on May 9, the Scottish league leaders have said. Former United captain Keane, who joined Celtic from United in December, said: "I am grateful to Manchester United for awarding me a testimonial game and to Celtic for agreeing to participate in it. "I look forward to returning to Old Trafford to express my appreciation to the fans for the support that they have given me over the last 12 years," added the 34-year-old. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed Keane from Nottingham Forest in 1993 for a then British record £3.75 million ($6.54 million), said: "This is something that we wanted to do this season as Roy started the season with us. "The supporters want to recognise the unbelievable contribution and success he had with Manchester United. "He was a fantastic player and captain for me and I hope he gets the proper send off he truly deserves. It will be a fantastic night for everyone." Keane, capped 66 times by Ireland, helped United win the Premier League seven times and reach the 1999 European Cup final, which they won but he missed through suspension. United to visit South AfricaMeanwhile, Manchester United will visit South Africa in July as part of their preparations for next season. A 22-man squad will make the trip, although none of United's players appearing in the latter stages of this year's World Cup will be included. United will play three matches between July 13 and 22, with the venues and opponents still to be announced. "This tour gives us a great chance to prepare those in our first team squad who aren't involved in the World Cup quarter-finals for the new season," said Ferguson. "It gives us an ideal platform to do what Manchester United has always done best -- give our talented younger players the opportunity to display their skills." United visited South Africa in 1993 where they were introduced to Nelson Mandela.
