Schalke too good for 10-man Levski
![]() Lincoln (arms raised) celebrates the goal that put Schalke ahead in Sofia SOFIA, Bulgaria -- UEFA Cup favorites Schalke came from a goal down to beat 10-man Levski Sofia 3-1 in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie in Bulgaria. Second-half strikes by Uruguayan substitute Gustavo Varela, Brazilian Lincoln and German international forward Gerald Asamoah put the Bundesliga side in reach of the last four. Levski Sofia, previously unbeaten at home in the tournament this season, had led through veteran Daniel Borimirov's sixth minute goal. The Bulgarians had French midfielder Cedric Bardon sent off for a second yellow card 10 minutes before halftime and Schalke took full advantage after the break. "We did not play well during the opening 20 minutes of the match and we were punished," said Schalke coach Mirko Slomka. "But after the break we improved and outplayed our opponents. Goalkeeper Frank Rost was outstanding tonight. He made some spectacular saves and played a vital role in our victory." "We were unable to resist Schalke's physical pressure," said Levski coach Staminir Stoilov. "We've had some other scoring opportunities but Valeri Domovchiiski and Milan Koprivarov missed them."
