FIFA uphold Turkey/Swiss sanctions
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSZURICH, Switzerland -- FIFA's appeal panel have upheld sanctions against Turkey and Switzerland for violence at their World Cup playoff last year. Turkey won the game in Istanbul 4-2 but Switzerland advanced on away goals, sparking scuffles between players and coaching staff in the tunnel on the way to the changing rooms. The panel rejected appeals by the Turkish FA, players Emre Belozoglu and Ozalan Alpay and assistant coach Mehmet Ozdilek. They also rejected an appeal by Switzerland's Benjamin Huggel. The decision can be appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. FIFA had ordered Turkey to play their next six competitive home matches at neutral venues without fans and pay a 200,000 Swiss franc ($154,000) fine. Three Turkish players -- including Emre and Alpay -- and Huggel were each banned for six games, while Ozdilek was suspended for a year. Switzerland's physiotherapist was suspended for two matches and fined 6,500 Swiss francs ($5,000).
