![]() Group D | World ranking: 57 Qualification: Topped their qualifying group ahead of Nigeria on head-to-head record Group D Matches: The Angolans proved their resilience in African qualifying by knocking out the mighty Nigeria with a win in Luanda and a hard-fought draw in the return fixture. At World Cup level they are an entirely unknown quantity. Many of the players are still home-based, while Angola have shunned the usual African preference for appointing European coaches in favor of Goncalves, whose Under-20 side impressed at the 2001 World Youth Championship. Benfica striker Pedro Mantorras is the only genuine star, though he fell out with Goncalves after being left out during qualifying, accusing the coach of a lack of respect. Angola will be desperate to perform well against Portugal, the country's former colonial power, but a place in the knockout stages is likely to be beyond them.
