Matthaeus: Germany need a miracle
FRANKFURT, Germany -- Lothar Matthaeus, who captained Germany to their last World Cup title in 1990, has no faith in the current team which he expects to go out in the round of 16 of the home World Cup. "It would be a miracle if the team made the final. We don't have the potential of the top 10 teams," Germany's most-capped player told reporters. "The team will be eliminated in the round of 16 when it has to play against England or Sweden." Matthaeus also said that he expects Juergen Klinsmann, with whom he has been at odds for years, to resign as coach, regardless of the outcome. "He will probably quit if he wins the title. If he crashes in the round of 16, what I fear, his system will have failed," Matthaeus said. Matthaeus, who won 150 caps, may be a contender should Klinsmann really quit after two years, although he has never coached in Germany. "(I will only return to Germany) once the decision-makers are convinced that I am the right man with my abilities. If not I will stay abroad," Matthaeus said. Matthaeus retired as a player five years ago and has since coached Hungary, Rapid Vienna, Partizan Belgrade and Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense.
