Sabrosa in World Cup fitness fear

Sabrosa's silky skills have gained him a regular place for Portugal.

LISBON, England -- Benfica striker Simao Sabrosa is facing a race against time to play for Portugal in the World Cup finals after spraining his left ankle in a weekend league match.

He will likely miss the last two matches of the Portuguese league season, the sports daily O Jogo reported Thursday, citing unamed club doctors.

Benfica captain Sabrosa, 26, has cemented his place in the Portugal side since Euro 2004.

His availability for the June 9-July 9 finals in Germany will depend on how he reacts to medical treatment for the injury, added the newspaper.

It would be cruel luck for Sabroso who missed the 2002 World Cup due to a knee injury.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will name his World Cup squad on May 15.

Portugal are in Group D along with Angola, Iran and Mexico. The country kicks off its campaign against former African colony Angola on June 11.

Benfica lie in third place in the 18-team standings, 11 points behind leaders Porto after 32 matches, but reached the knockout stage of the Champions League, helping to eliminate Manchester United.
