England receive Owen injury boost

Owen's diagnosis is a major boost to England after Wayne Rooney's injury.

LONDON, England -- England striker Michael Owen has suffered no further damage to his foot following his comeback from injury, his club Newcastle United have confirmed.

Owen, who broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in December, played the final 30 minutes of Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Birmingham City on Saturday and came off saying he was not entirely comfortable.

"Michael Owen went to see the specialist first thing on Sunday morning where he had an x-ray and various tests. The news was positive and there is no damage," said a spokesman.

"The specialist told Michael it was quite normal to experience a certain level of pain in the first couple of games back playing after an injury of this kind."

It was a piece of good news for England's World Cup hopes after the foot injury suffered by Owen's England strike partner Wayne Rooney.

Rooney fractured the base of the fourth metatarsal of his right foot in Manchester United's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday with his club saying he would be out for six weeks.

However, coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who must name his squad by May 15, has revealed he will select Rooney if the player has a chance of playing at some stage in the tournament.

"It is too early to know if he is going to have a chance to be fit or not, but if we think he has a chance then I will pick him," said Eriksson.

"It is a hope and it is a hope for all England fans. We are talking about Wayne Rooney, he is one of the best players in the world and he is extremely important for us, so if we think he has a chance to get fit during the World Cup then of course we will pick him."

England meet Paraguay in their World Cup group opener in Frankfurt on June 10, six weeks away.
