Maldini tops CNN Dream Team poll
Paolo Maldini, pictured tackling Romario in the 1994 World Cup final, topped Dream Team voting. (CNN) -- As the 2006 World Cup heads towards a climax with Sunday's final between Italy and France in Berlin, CNN can unveil the results of its "Dream Team" poll of the tournament's greatest-ever players. Throughout the World Cup CNN has been asking Fan Zone users to send in their teams with thousands responding from all over the world. The final results, perhaps surprisingly, show that Italian defender Paolo Maldini is your overall all-time favorite World Cup player, chosen by 2,693 of you -- making him even more popular than Pele and Diego Maradona, FIFA's two footballers of the century. Brazil dominate the list, with Pele (2,425) joined by four of his compatriots from the South Americans' current squad. Ronaldo, a World Cup winner in 2002 and the tournament's all-time leading scorer thanks to his three goals in Germany, plays alongside his legendary countryman in attack, chosen by 1,810 voters. Reigning world footballer of the year Ronaldinho (2,323 votes), who also collected a winners' medal in 2002, is favored in midfield despite his disappointing tournament in Germany. At 26 the Barcelona star is the youngest player in the team. Meanwhile both Cafu (1,921) -- the first man to play in three World Cup finals between 1994 and 2002 -- and Roberto Carlos (1,783), a losing finalist in 1998 and a winner in 2002, are selected in defense. Zinedine Zidane (2,281), who scored twice in France's 3-0 win over Brazil in the 1998 final, is the only other current player selected. Having said he will retire after the World Cup, Sunday's final represents his chance to bow out by winning the game's ultimate honor for the second time -- and gives football fans a final opportunity to enjoy one of the greatest talents of the modern game. Ronaldinho and Zidane are joined in midfield by two of the great World Cup stars of the past. Maradona (2,496) won the tournament almost single-handedly for Argentina in 1986 while Johan Cruyff (1,431) was the driving force behind the brilliant Dutch team that reached the final in 1974. Franz Beckenbauer (2,222), who captained West Germany to victory over Cruyff's Netherlands in that match, makes up the defensive numbers while Italy's goalkeeping hero of 1982 Dino Zoff (699) -- the oldest man to lift the World Cup -- provides a safe pair of hands behind the back four. Nine of the 11 players are World Cup winners, with the exceptions being Maldini, a beaten finalist in 1994, and Cruyff. Among those who perhaps deserve a place on the Dream Team substitutes' bench are Michel Platini (1,142), the midfield star of the elegant French team that reached the semifinals twice in the 1980s, and England defender Bobby Moore (880), who lifted the World Cup in 1966. Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin (570) was the most popular No. 1 after Zoff. Check out the Dream Team page for profiles of all the players chosen by you and read some of your suggestions below. ___________________________ • From: Daan Jansen; Bucharest, Romania • Posted: July 07, 2006 • Comment: Hard...
