Madrid into second after thriller
![]() Carlos (left) celebrates his goal as Real Madrid moved into second place. MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid climbed above Valencia into second place in the Primera Liga on Thursday with a 3-2 away win over relegation-threatened Racing Santander. Roberto Carlos scored from the penalty spot after 33 minutes and Roberto Soldado and Robinho extended the lead after the break. But Racing staged a stirring comeback with Sergio Matabuena scoring twice in the last 14 minutes as Real wobbled. Carlos put Real ahead after Robinho was fouled in the area, and made a surging run to set up the second. His attempt was saved but Soldado scored as Raul fired the loose ball goalwards in the 60th minute. Guti fed Robinho to score from the edge of the area 10 minutes later, but that sparked a spirited fightback from the home side. Matabuena fired in a loose ball at a corner after 76 minutes, and in the final minute bundled in another loose ball as Real failed to clear a low free-kick. Real have 69 points with two games left to play, one ahead of third-placed Valencia, who lost 2-1 away to Real Mallorca on Wednesday. Valencia's defeat allowed Barcelona to retain their Primera Liga title, as their 1-0 win at Celta Vigo saw them climb to 79 points with a game in hand. Osasuna are fourth on 65 points after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0. At the foot of the table, Racing stay 17th, one point above the relegation places.
