Tottenham sign Bulgarian Berbatov

Berbatov's transfer is subject to the approval of a work permit.

LONDON, England -- Tottenham Hotspur have signed Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov from Bayer Leverkusen for 16 million euros ($20.49 million), subject to approval of a work permit.

The 25-year-old Bulgarian international had agreed personal terms and would join the English club on July 1 provided he secured the permit, Spurs said.

"Tottenham is a club that is building something special. The squad has some terrific young players, an excellent manager and coaching staff and I am looking forward to playing my part," Berbatov said.

Under Dutch manager Martin Jol, Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last season. They just missed out on a place in the Champions League qualifying round but will play in the UEFA Cup next season.

Berbatov's contract with German Bundesliga side Leverkusen had not been due to expire until 2009 but a clause allowed him to join another club for at least 15 million euros ($18.15 million).

"There were a number of clubs interested in signing Dimitar, clubs from France, Spain and the Premiership," said Spurs Sporting Director Damien Comolli.

"We are delighted he has chosen to join us. He is a tall, skilful, highly-talented striker who not only has a proven track record of being able to finish, but also of creating scoring opportunities for team mates."

Berbatov, who made his name in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia as a teenager, said last month he was interested in moving to the Spanish Primera Liga. Spurs' London rivals Arsenal were also linked with the player.

Berbatov was named Bulgaria's Footballer of the Year for the second time running in December. He led Leverkusen to the Champions League final in 2002 after joining the German side from CSKA in 2001.
