Striker Barbarez was one of the big reasons for Hamburg's surge to third

BERLIN, Germany -- Bosnia and Hamburg SV striker Sergej Barbarez has signed a two-year deal with Bayer Leverkusen and will join them at the end of June.

"It's fantastic that we've signed such an experienced and capable striker for our young team," Leverkusen commercial manager Rudi Voeller said on Wednesday.

Barbarez, 34, had a strong season in Hamburg and was one of the keys to the club's jump to third place from the middle of the pack in the Bundesliga.

"Actually, I was hoping to stay in Hamburg, but we couldn't reach a deal," Barbarez said.

Leverkusen needed a replacement for Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, who will join English Premier League Tottenham Hotspur provided he obtains a work permit.
