RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Three football fans were shot in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium by a plainclothes police officer when unrest broke out in the stands, media reports said.

One of the men had life-threatening injuries after being shot in the head Thursday night at a second-leg Copa Brasil semifinal between Flamengo and Ipatinga.

Witnesses accused the officer of indiscriminately firing into the crowd with his PT 380 pistol. He was taken into police custody.

A total of five people were hurt in the violence that suddenly broke out in the stands.

Flamengo beat their third division opponents 2-1 to advance to the final against Rio rivals Vasco da Gama 3-2 on aggregate.
