![]() Zambrotta suffered the injury during an informal training session. FLORENCE, Italy -- Defender Gianluca Zambrotta is expected to miss Italy's opening World Cup game against Ghana because of a left thigh injury. Team physician Enrico Castellacci said on Tuesday that Zambrotta would be out for 15-20 days. That would mean he could also miss Italy's second game against the United States. The Azzurri play Ghana on June 12, the United States five days later, and finish the group stages against the Czech Republic on June 22. Zambrotta was injured in an informal training game against a local amateur side on Sunday. He will travel with the team for two friendlies in Switzerland this week. Zambrotta usually starts at left back for Italy, although he has also played recently on the right flank. In the team's last few official matches, Fabio Grosso has started on the left flank with Zambrotta on the right. Lazio's Massimo Oddo and Palermo's Cristian Zaccardo are possible substitutes. Midfielder Simone Perrotta injured his right knee ahead of Wednesday's World Cup warm-up game with Switzerland in Geneva. The 28-year-old AS Roma player suffered the knock in Tuesday's training and hobbled from the pitch. Team doctors ruled out any ligament damage after a preliminary examination and Perrotta's participation in the World Cup does not appear to be in danger.
