![]() Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal | Midfielder Age: 21 Ronaldo's dynamic wing play has been a highlight of Portugal's run to the knockout stages, although he sat out most of their bad-tempered second round win over the Netherlands after leaving the pitch in tears following a crude challenge that left him with a thigh injury. Fortunately for Portugal, who will definitely be without suspended schemer Deco for the quarterfinal with England, Ronaldo is expected to make a full recovery in time to play against a side who know him well from his achievements at Manchester United. Able to play on both sides of the pitch, Ronaldo attracted the attentions of United coach Alex Ferguson in 2003 after the English side had been beaten by Ronaldo's Sporting Lisbon in a friendly. Ferguson promptly signed the 17-year-old for $23 million in a deal made possible by David Beckham's departure to Real Madrid. Ronaldo's showy style and individualistic attitude has brought him regular criticism, yet few would question his status as one of the world's most naturally gifted footballers. Since starring for Portugal during their run to the final of Euro 2004, Ronaldo has also worked hard on becoming a more consistent and influential player. With Portugal's "golden generation" of players, built around the aging talisman Luis Figo, now reaching the end of their careers, Portugal's hopes of success in Germany and beyond rest at the feet of their young winger.
