One of Mexico's most distinguished players, Rafael Marquez is also one of his country's most successful exports, firmly establishing himself as a first choice defender with all-conquering Spanish and European champions Barcelona.

Marquez joined the Catalan giants after three successful seasons in France with Monaco, who he helped to the French title in his first season, when he was also named the league's best defender.

At international level, Marquez brings World Cup experience to the Mexican defense, having been awarded the captain's armband during the 2002 finals where Mexico reached the knockout stages.

His defensive awareness, strength and leadership qualities have been crucial to recent Mexican success which has pushed the unglamorous side to fourth in the latest FIFA world rankings.
