Mikel joining Chelsea as saga ends

Mikel's future has been in doubt since his disappearing act last year.

LONDON, England -- Chelsea have agreed a £16 million ($30 million) fee for Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel putting to an end a long-running transfer saga.

Manchester United and Mikel's former Norwegian club Lyn Oslo have reached a settlement with the west London club over the player's future.

Manchester United will receive £12 million ($22.5 million) with the other £4 million ($7.5 million) being paid to Lyn.

Mikel's registration will be transferred from Manchester United to Chelsea with immediate effect and United have also agreed to help Chelsea in a work permit application while terminating their claim to the player.

Under the terms of the agreement Chelsea will pay half of the fee now and half in a year's time with both recipient clubs receiving their fees in two installments.

Manchester United and Lyn have also agreed to withdraw their claims against Chelsea -- who have denied any culpability in the scandal surrounding the transfer.

Mikel originally signed for Manchester United from Lyn last year but then claimed he was forced to do so amid reports from the Norwegian club that he had received death threats over the transfer.

He later went missing with his Nigerian agent John Shittu before resurfacing and playing for Nigeria at the African Nations Cup in February.
