![]() Roberto Carlos Brazil | Defender Achievements: World Cup winner 2002, Runner-up 1998 An automatic choice at leftback for more than a decade, Roberto Carlos is the latest in a long line of rampaging Brazilian fullbacks in the style of Nilton Santos and Carlos Alberto. Along with rightback Cafu, Roberto Carlos has provided defensive stability and continuity in a side which, in spite of its creative flair going forward, has historically been less organized at the other end of the field. Roberto Carlos made his international debut in 1992, but missed out on a place in the squad which won the World Cup two years later. By the time of the 1998 World Cup however he was one of Brazil's biggest stars, having made a name for himself in Europe with Inter Milan and Real Madrid and with a stunning cannonball freekick against France in a friendly tournament the previous year. Despite Brazil's 3-0 defeat by France in the final, the tournament was a personal triumph for Roberto Carlos, one of the competition's most consistent performers. Roberto Carlos arrived at the 2002 World Cup on the back of his winning his third European Cup title with Real Madrid, and with only a world champion's medal missing from his collection of career honors. Buoyed by the return to form and fitness of Ronaldo and the skills of Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, the Brazilians were the stars of the tournament with Roberto Carlos once again playing a key supporting role. With Brazil once again favorites for the title in Germany, Roberto Carlos has every chance of appearing in his third straight World Cup final.
