Fan Zone forum: Is Ronaldo the best?

story.ronnie.jpg
Ronaldo scores a record 15th World Cup goal.

SPECIAL REPORT

(CNN) -- Criticized mercilessly at the start of the World Cup about his lack of form and supposed weight problems, Brazilian striker Ronaldo has proved his critics wrong with three goals in the world champions' run to the quarterfinals.

With a trademark round-the-keeper finish in Brazil's second round win over Ghana, the 2002 Golden Boot winner looked back to his best, defying those critics who had written him off after his sluggish performances in Brazil's opening matches.

Furthermore, the goal pushed Ronaldo ahead of Gerd Muller in the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 15 goals.

But is Ronaldo the best striker ever, better than Muller, Paolo Rossi, Mario Kempes or Just Fontaine? And is his current goalscoring success more a result of playing in a great team, surrounded by great players?

Here at the Fan Zone we want to know what you think. Whatever your views may be, we want to hear about them. Send us your comments and and we'll post the best ones here.

I've recently posted something here about Ronaldo (June 28th), but I'd like to take it back.

Yes, he's the greatest striker of all times, seems to be a great person above all, but like his team mates, he didn't deserve to wear the Brazilian uniform this time.

Soccer in Brazil is like a religion; it's actually our religion! Our country is sad after the game against France. Not because we lost, because losing is part of the game, and we know it. But we are sad because we did not fight.

Our players, including Ronaldo, just stood there, watching Zidane play his best game in long years. After the end of the game, the country was crying, but did you see any Brazilian player crying? To play for our national team is supposed to be an honour, and when you get to be called to wear our uniform, you have to give your blood on the field! And it didn't happen...

Undoubtedly, the best striker in World Cup history.

When someone has 2 phenomenal performances at different World Cups in which he scored a total of 12 goals, and has scored 3 goals by the 2nd rnd. of a tournament he is supposedly overweight, and an goal record of 15 goals in 18 world cup games, he can only be called what he truly is 'The Best'.

BAD. The way he is playing he doesn't deserve to play for Brazil. He stood there like a statue of liberty. He is absolutely replaceable and completely worthless.

Ronaldo ... well the flashes are still there but he is too over weight. He can still do the magic.

Ronaldo is like a phoenix; he always "rises from the ashes". His life is am amazing example of overcoming difficulties. Like now - he is back, not matter his weight.

Ronaldo is the greatest striker of all time...he just keeps coming back for more. And all those who say he is not the best all I can say is get over it!!

His records speak for itself. Yes he had a bad year last season so what, all players go through it and then they come back. To me he's the third greatest player of all time after Maradona and Pele!!

Yes he is a bit bigger than he used to be. But Ronaldo has evolved into a smarter and most importantly sharper player than anybody is willing to admit.

The goals he scored and the styles in which he scored surpassed any great player of this time or the past. Good example is his second goal against Japan. Just because you can run faster and look fitter doesn't mean you're the phenomenon.

Ronaldo is the true great player.

After this last game, setting the world record for most goals in world cups, do we really have to answer this question?

He's back, and it's just the beginning!!! Watch out for him!

Brazil, soon-to-be 6 times World Cup Winner!

Question: Where were Carlos and Cafu in the last game?

Answer: Ronaldo ate them!

RONALDO is fat and unfit, but he is still one of those elite players that can still be classed as WORLD CLASS and in his current state can still influence and win games even for an in form BRAZIL side. That said, I predict ENGLAND to win the soccer tournament.

This is what I expected from Ronaldo. Fat as he is, he still possesses an incredible sprint and dribble skills.

I don't understand those who want Ronaldo on the bench. Brazil has only two pure strikers: Ronaldo and Adriano. Adriano doesn't have impressive results without Ronaldo in the field. Ronaldo drags two defenders (or more) next to him giving Adriano a lot of space to move.

I'm on for at trip to Brazil. So I wondered if Pereirra wanted me to bring Ronaldo along. Though... forget it. To much overweight for the plane.

For a star like him, he deserve to be given the time... encourage him to get back to his superb talent rather than attack him.

I just think that Ronaldo is waiting for the right time to click. He is well aware of the fact that Brazil will sail through these initial games.

I am willing to bet my farm that the world will see this phenomena rise to the occasion in the quarters.

Two games of boring Ronaldo performance is enough. I cannot bear another game watching him run, jump and kick like the fat lady. Let's get Robinho or some new blood in the front line. Enough is enough.

Wake up Pareirra!!

Well its really unfortunate for him to go out like this. It is clearly evident that he is struggling, the minute he is substituted the game comes to life with the ever energetic Robinho.

The sun has set on another star.

Form is Temporary and Class is Permanent.

One must not tag him as fat straight away, he will shine and break the record of being the highest scorer in World Cup history.

I'd start him and see how he fares in the first half, and then make adjustments from there.

No brilliance- no second half...

I remember Ronaldo very well from the previous World Cup - WOW, what a player.

This World Cup, I barely recognized the man - where did all that extra weight come from???

Ronaldo was missing in that match against Croatia. He looked fat, old and sluggish. He has lost the flair.
