Wenger eager for Cole to stay put

Cole is reported to be unhappy with the way Arsenal have treated him.

LONDON, England -- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted he wants Ashley Cole to stay at the English Premier League club.

Cole's future is uncertain because he feels he was made a scapegoat by the London club during a Premier League investigation into Chelsea's attempt to sign him last season.

The England left-back, 25, has reportedly revealed his anger at the way Arsenal's board handled the probe into the tapping-up affair in his new book, set to be published shortly.

Cole, who signed a new contract after the dispute, is said to have fallen out with Wenger and did not invite the Frenchman to his wedding to pop singer Cheryl Tweedy on Saturday.

His new deal reportedly has a clause allowing him to leave if any team bids £16m for him -- and Chelsea and Real Madrid are both watching the situation closely.

But Wenger said: "He has two years on his contract at Arsenal and unless we sell him he has a future at Arsenal. I want him to stay.

"Nothing is decided yet on that front and he is an Arsenal player like everybody else."

Wenger believes Cole was wrong to talk about the incident with Chelsea and added: "I don't like it when there is too much in the newspapers. Football players are there to play football and not to talk too much.

"With Ashley Cole, when one day he looks back on his career he will see Arsenal has helped him a lot and he is intelligent enough to make the difference. I feel time selects what is important and what is not important."
