Bednar, Zapotocny named by Czechs
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSPRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Czech Republic coach Karel Brueckner has called up striker Roman Bednar and defender Tomas Zapotocny for next week's friendly against Serbia. The Czechs are rebuilding their ageing squad, which exited this year's World Cup at the group stage, ahead of qualification for the 2008 European championship. Bednar plays for Scottish club Hearts while Zapotocny is with Czech champions Slovan Liberec. Brueckner also called up midfielders Karel Pitak of Salzburg and Jiri Jarosik of Celtic for the August match to be played in the eastern Czech town of Uherske Hradiste. The Czechs have lost midfielder Karel Poborsky who retired from international football after the World Cup. Veteran playmaker Pavel Nedved of Juventus said he would take part in the friendly and then discuss his international future with Brueckner.
